I love that feeling when you wake up, check your clock, see that it's 4am and then sigh with happiness because you don't have to get up for like another 4 hours.

Or, if you're a student, waking up at 8am and sighing with happiness because you have absolutely nowhere to go until at least 1pm.

So, to give you some pleasant delightful thoughts before slipping off into the land of nod, I've included this delicious recipe.
I've never had refried beans before but it was delightful. To be honest, It also just gave me a reason to eat a whole bag of doritos.
I reduced the salt in this recipe as there was WAY too much in it. I didn't want my heart to give up after they just fixed it a year ago. I don't think the doctors would be very impressed if I showed up on their doorstep anytime soon saying "I broke it again.."

#IWantToSleepForever
For my research project this year, I'm studying sleep and it's relation to a bunch of other things (personality, burden, stress, coping). Sleep is such an interesting thing that most of us really don't think too much about.
For instance, I was reading the other day about this phenomenon called "Sleep Paralysis" which, in a nutshell, is paralysis that occurs during REM sleep.
When we enter REM sleep (dreaming) something called REM atonia can occur. This causes our muscle neurons to stop firing, resulting in paralysis. This usually occurs as a person falls asleep or just before they wake up and it can last anywhere between 7 seconds to 7 minutes.
During this REM atonia, the person becomes aware but not quite conscious. In this state, the person can experience hallucinations which are usually of a disturbing and/or frightening nature. Due to these hallucinations, the person can think that they're dreaming.
Basically, it either occurs as your falling asleep or about to wake up. In these two very different states, the conscious brain is either trying to make sense of entering a dream-like state; or the subconscious dreaming brain is attempting to make sense of the real world. This, coupled with the REM atonia, is what happens during sleep paralysis.
SEEMINGLY, it occurs in between 20% - 60% of individuals.
I.never.want.to.sleep.again.
Imagine! Paralysed, stuck to the bed, conscious, but your brain is so confused that it starts making you see all these crazy things!
Worst of all, it most commonly occurs in people who drink excessively and have had inadequate sleep.
How it hasn't happened to me yet, I do not know!

Homemade Refried Beans with Flame-roasted Red Pepper
2 + 1/2 cups Dry Pinto beans
15 cups Water
15 cups Water
1 Onion, diced
1 Roasted Red Pepper, diced
1 Tablespoon Paprika
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
3 Tablespoons Salt
1 tsp Dried Chilli Flakes
1 Roasted Red Pepper, diced
1 Tablespoon Paprika
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
3 Tablespoons Salt
1 tsp Dried Chilli Flakes
Soak the beans in water overnight. This shortens the cooking time by SO much. You know, unless you like to boil beans all day, if that's your thing. I'm not judging.
Drain the beans. Place the beans and the water in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Boil for 90 mins. Set aside one cup of the beanjuice water before draining.
In a frying pan, fry off the onions, paprika and brown sugar for about 5-10 mins. Add this plus the roasted red pepper to the beans.
Place the bean mix into a blender and blitz on high until you have a smooth purée. You might have to do this in batches depending on how big your blender is. Season with salt as needed.
Buy a big bag of tortilla chips, park yourself infront of the telly, gorge yourself on some delicious "healthy" refried beans.

How in the world did you break your heart a year ago? You look too young for that! Is the paralysis what happens if someone 'hits bottom' in a falling dream? I could see that easily and why it's so scary for many.
ReplyDeleteI love refried beans and yours look delicious!
I think that dreams about falling are more related to stress or a feeling of "loss of control" in the person's own life. I don't think it has any relation to sleep paralysis. The paralysis only occurs on the brink of falling asleep or just as the person is about to wake up. It can occur regardless what the person is dreaming about. I hope I never experience it!
DeleteThese refrieds looks fantastic. I have never added brown sugar before or dried pepper flakes, I bet that gives them a kick. Sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteIt just gives them so much more flavour I think. :)
Delete(Whoops - let's try that again...)
ReplyDeleteI studied sleep a bit, once - not professionally, but a little for school and a lot out of curiousity. I recently heard that there's a significant increase in heart attacks right after daylight savings time, presumably due to the sudden change in sleep patterns. I had no idea!
Your refried beans look incredible! My dad has made his own a couple times, but I've never attempted them myself. Your recipe looks super tasty - I love the addition of brown sugar and spices! I will definitely have to give this a try.
Also... how is it that you've never had refried beans before? Aren't they amazing? I've always been a fan of Mexican food, so I use them quite a bit for nachoes, burritos, etc. One of my favorite applications is probably Huevos Rancheros - tortillas or corn chips, topped with refried beans, eggs, salsa, cheese, and sometimes other toppings. So good! :)
I suppose over here in the UK they're not just not as prominent. I first heard of them from a friend here and then I decided I'd look into making them! Then I realised what a big thing they were over in the states and Mexico! I just ran out of this batch last week.. might throw together another batch tomorrow!
DeleteI just saw something about a bratty uncontrollable kid in which the parents found out he had a sleeping disorder. Problem resolved and the child is no longer a brat. Sleep does have its importance.
ReplyDeleteHere is am in Tex Mex land and I have never made my own refried beans. Shameful, I know. Yours does inspire and I like frijoles, so I do need to try it. Putting it on the to do list. Happy Tuesday Liam
I totally agree Tina, sleep is sooo important especially when it comes to our behaviour. I know that I am like a hell beast if I don't get enough sleep :P
Deleteooo yum that looks tasty! I make refried beans in my crockpot and make so much that I freeze them in small containers that hold about the same amount as a can would hold. Makes it easy for recipes like freezer burritos, tacos or just to munch on!
ReplyDeleteI have never made refried beans from scratch before but I eat them all of the time....will definitely give these a try...soooo yummy! Opening the bag of chips now!
ReplyDeleteAs for sleep, I would be an interesting case study. I sleep very lightly and I am conscious of my dreams as I am having them. I have several dreams each night that I can recall and that wake me throughout the night so I must experience some degree of this though I don't ever feel paralyzed. I also have bad dreams quite often. The strange thing (well, there are many strange things about me) is that I am a morning person and wake early and happy every morning feeling well rested even though I wake throughout each night.
Sleep is something that is so subjective. It's different for each and every person. You might just be one of those lucky people that don't need a lot of sleep. I, on the other hand, need at least 10 hours every night or I physically cannot wake up when I need to. Slept in SO many times.
DeleteI tried to make homemade refried beans a few days ago but they turned out horrible! I am definitely going to have to try again and use this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
